Phil Jones has pulled out of the England squad after picking up an injury in training ahead of the trip to Germany.
And training-ground pictures appear to suggest the challenge could have been made by club team-mate Chris Smalling.
Jones looked to be in pain after Smalling's challenge on the Manchester United centre back.
