Sir Alex Ferguson tried to resign Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United in 2013 in a bid to build a Champions-League winning squad, but retired two weeks after failing to lure the Portuguese star back to Old Trafford.
Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra revealed that Ferguson was also trying to bring Gareth Bale from Tottenham along with Ronaldo to United just weeks before he walked away from football.
Evra, who was signed by Ferguson and enjoyed eight successful years at United, said the legendary boss had told him he had no plans to retire despite intense speculation around his long-term future at the time.
