I’ll be honest, I approached Tuesday evening’s BBC 1 documentary ‘Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum And Dad’ with some real trepidation. Firstly because I’m not particularly keen at having my emotional heart strings tugged at so acutely.
Especially when it is being done so with the story of a life lost so tragically young. Rebecca Ferdinand succumbed to a second aggressive bout of breast cancer in 2015, and that loss then having affected the people who are left in its terrible wake. Quite frankly, for me, this kind of visceral openness is too often just too hard to watch.
