An Ellen White double seemed to have secured a path through to the semi-finals with Hege Riise’s side leading 2-1 but Chelsea’s Sam Kerr scored for Australia in the 89th minute to take the game to extra-time. The Matildas took a two-goal lead during the additional half-hour, capitalising on a missed penalty by Caroline Weir.
White grabbed one back for Team GB, completing her hat-trick, but it wasn’t enough for the Brits, who lost 4-3 and are eliminated at the same stage as they were at London 2012.
Toone had become an option off the bench for Riise’s squad, having initially been named on the reserve list.
