Ronnie Cope may not be the first name that is mentioned when Manchester United supporters discuss their favourite club's folklore but the Cheshire-born former defender nevertheless stands as a significant figure in the Reds' rich history. Cope, who sadly passed away earlier this month at the age of 81, came to prominence in the wake of the Munich Air Disaster. He was one of the players called on to prevent the club from buckling under the enormous emotion and trauma when that terrible tragedy befell United in February 1958. Born in October 1934 in Crewe, the Cheshire town famed for its railway heritage, Cope joined United in 1950 after representing Crewe Alexandra and England at schoolboy level.
