Fifth-placed St Etienne suffered a blow to their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League as title chasers Nice returned to winning ways.
Christophe Galtier's side had the chance to narrow the nap on fourth-placed Lyon to one point in Ligue 1 but they were sunk by Wylan Cyprien's early thunderbolt.
The French midfielder fired a 25-yard strike past the St Etienne keeper in the seventh minute on Wednesday night.
St Etienne face Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Europa League next Thursday (February 16).
