The 20-year-old striker was sent off in the 71st minute for squaring up to Phil Bardsley aggressively, just ten minutes after coming on as a substitute for Alexis Sanchez. The incident began when Bardsley sent Rashford tumbling to the ground, just beyond the byline as the ball ran out of play.
Rashford later tweeted:
“Emotions got the better of me, I shouldn’t have reacted like that. Sorry to everyone at the club and all the fans. #MUFC.”
When asked about the incident in his post-match press conference, United manager Jose Mourinho said:
“It was the experience of Bardsley, with 20 years of football, against the impulse and the naivety of a guy that has been in top football for three years but is still a young kid.
