Manchester United's Jose Mourinho was 'massively disappointed' to lose out to Rafa Benitez for Liverpool job, reveals Danny Murphy

Jose Mourinho was 'massively disappointed' to be overlooked in favour of Rafa Benitez for the Liverpool job in 2004, according to Danny Murphy.

Despite the fractious relationship he now shares with Liverpool, a consequence of his time at Chelsea and now Manchester United, Mourinho was keen to take over at Anfield after leaving Porto.

Former Reds midfielder Murphy claims Liverpool opted for Benitez instead because of the Spaniard's pedigree in winning La Liga and the UEFA Cup with Valencia.
