Jose Mourinho was 'massively disappointed' to be overlooked in favour of Rafa Benitez for the Liverpool job in 2004, according to Danny Murphy.
Despite the fractious relationship he now shares with Liverpool, a consequence of his time at Chelsea and now Manchester United, Mourinho was keen to take over at Anfield after leaving Porto.
Former Reds midfielder Murphy claims Liverpool opted for Benitez instead because of the Spaniard's pedigree in winning La Liga and the UEFA Cup with Valencia.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy was asked if he would have like to have played under Mourinho, to which he replied: 'Well, strangely, I nearly did!
