He was actually sitting in the stands when Ray Wood injured himself and went off, leading to United coach Bert Whalley coming to find him and tell him he was going on. He quickly changed and darted over to relieve Duncan Edwards who was covering Wood in goal. "As I ran past [Edwards] said: ‘What the hell are you doing here?’ I just said: ‘I think I am playing, Mr Edwards.’ It all went by in a blur from that point,” he told manutd.
