Wayne Rooney's future role in the Manchester United first-team lies as a holding midfielder, according to former England international Trevor Sinclair.
Rooney's poor start to the season continued as Jose Mourinho's side crashed to a third successive defeat in a 3-1 reversal at Watford on Sunday.
The United captain has failed to find a consistent role in the starting eleven for both club and country this season, having been positioned in attack, as a No 10 and in midfield.
But speaking on Match of the Day 2 on Sunday, Sinclair insisted that Rooney remained good enough to stay in the side but needed a deeper role to reflect his growing age.
