Jesse Lingard has had his fair share of detractors to deal with over the years, but even he would have been taken aback by the vile abuse he received trying to board the Manchester United team bus after their FA Cup victory against Derby County.
The vitriol hurled at the midfielder was loud and constant enough for team-mate Luke Shaw to step in. It was an ugly scene which disgraced the United supporters who felt it necessary.
Unfortunately, the abuse is something Lingard has almost become desensitised to.
He is the footballer everyone loves to have a pop at – the player who talks the talk without walking the walk, who is happy to flaunt his status off the pitch, without actually delivering on it.
