Background: Ron Atkinson’s Reds had been beaten finalists in the League Cup the previous season, losing 1-2 to Liverpool at Wembley, but had made up for it by lifting the FA Cup. Having overcome Third Division Port Vale over two legs in the second round, the Reds now faced Fourth Division Colchester United.
The goal: Already ahead through Gordon McQueen’s sixth minute header, United produced a wonderful move to unlock the U’s defence. Mick Duxbury played the ball into Ray Wilkins who exchanged passes with Moses before finding Bryan Robson. The skipper threaded the ball through to Moses, who delightfully shifted the ball onto his right foot before slotting in.
