Gary McAllister, Jermain Defoe and the players who enjoyed a late resurgence to their career

It looked as though Defoe’s best days were over when he left the Premier League to head to Toronto in January 2014. He didn’t settle to life in Major League Soccer, however, and after training with Tottenham Hotspur was soon back in England with Sunderland. Defoe has been the only light of joy in a spiritless Black Cats team over the past three years. His tally stands at 34 league goals in 87 appearances, and he isn’t short of offers this summer with the likelihood that he’ll remain in England’s top flight following Sunderland’s relegation.
