Former Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty recalls winning the FA Cup and getting sacked: 'Given more time I could have done better'

With a decent change of pace for a man of 88, Tommy Docherty springs from his chair by the fireplace and hurries up a short staircase to the cosy TV room where he keeps a few souvenirs.

Nothing too flash but four Scotland caps are tastefully framed and hang on a wall with a couple of small trophies on a shelf.

He lifts a heavy, silver cigarette case and wipes a thumb across the engraving, a message of congratulations from Manchester United in honour of winning the FA Cup in 1977.

‘I had to ask them for it, mind,’ quipped the Doc.
