Wayne Rooney should have retired from international duty after England's humiliating exit from Euro 2016, according to former goalkeeper Peter Shilton.
England captain Rooney, who earned his 116th cap in the World Cup qualifying victory over Slovakia and is closing in on Shilton record of 125 appearances, plans to retire from the national fold in 2018.
However, Shilton feels the Manchester United star, England's all-time top scorer with 53 goals, should have stepped down in the summer.
The 66-year-old believes Rooney has much less of an impact having dropped deeper and should retire but insists it has nothing to do with the possibility of breaking his record.
