Dirk Kuyt can pay homage to his Liverpool FC career by knocking Manchester United out of Europe - but his tale stretches far beyond Anfield

When Dirk Kuyt joined Liverpool in a £10million transfer from Feyenoord in August 2006, he was billed as the ruthless striker Rafa Benitez's side needed to catapult it to the Premier League title.

He had been labelled the '20/20 man' - purportedly by Martin Jol - who would fire 20 goals while providing as many assists. His return of 71 strikes in 101 appearances for Feyenoord only fanned the flames of anticipation surrounding his arrival.

But when he left the club six years later, having played 285 games for Liverpool, Kuyt had forged a different reputation. He departed as a winger synonymous with an unrelenting work-rate, a performer in red who could look up at The Kop where Liverpool fans would hold a banner claiming him as their 'working class hero'.
