David Herd obituary

Manchester United’s return to trophy-winning ways after the horror and tragedy of the Munich Air Disaster arrived in 1963 on a balmy May afternoon at Wembley Stadium.

Five years after United lost eight players and three backroom staff among 23 fatalities on the snowy wastes of Munich-Riem Airport, the club was back lifting silverware by defeating Leicester City 3-1 in the FA Cup final.

Leicester were favourites to succeed in that showpiece event but United, who had endured a torrid season of Division One football, and only narrowly avoided falling through the trapdoor into the Second Division, rose to the occasion to win the FA Cup in grand style.
