Chris Smalling needed a police escort to make Manchester United’s flight back from Rotterdam on Thursday night when he struggled to provide a urine sample after the Europa League defeat to Feyenoord.
Jose Mourinho and the rest of the United squad left Smalling at the De Kuip stadium after the England defender and teammate Ander Herrera were selected for routine testing by anti-doping officers.
Smalling had a longer wait to produce his sample – a not uncommon occurrence with players who are dehydrated after a game – and was then rushed to the airport with the help of a police escort.
