The 41-year-old enjoyed 12 seasons as a player here at Old Trafford before embarking on a coaching career under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He later became our caretaker manager for three matches when he earned wins over Villarreal and Arsenal, plus a draw against Chelsea.
Carrick left United last December to spend time with his family and consider his next move in the game to which he has contributed so much. Ten months later, he embarks on his first permanent role in management and at another club that means so much to him.
“I’m really excited to be here and to be part of a club with such a deep history and tradition,” said Carrick in a statement on Boro’s website.
