Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke says he is 'quite optimistic' that Erling Haaland will sign a new deal at the club as he insists it would be 'a mistake' for the Norwegian forward to leave next summer

Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke admits he is 'quite optimistic' of agreeing a new contract with star forward Erling Haaland amid doubt over the Norwegian's future at the club.

Haaland signed for the Bundesliga side in January and has lived up to his reputation as one of the most talented young forwards in Europe - scoring 26 goals in 28 games for the team so far.

His performances for previous club Red Bull Salzburg had generated a host of interest from top clubs around Europe, including Manchester United and Real Madrid, but Dortmund won the race in a shock £17million deal, and now the club face a battle to keep the player on their books next year.
