Arsenal’s poor finishing was the reason they failed to secure an impressive victory over Atletico Madrid on Thursday evening, according to manager Arsene Wenger.
The Gunners wasted numerous chances against Diego Simeone’s side, who were forced to play more than 80 minutes with only 10 men due to Sime Vrsaljko’s early dismissal.
They totalled 28 shots in all, but only Alexandre Lacazette - in fine form on the night - found a way past Jan Oblak in the Atleti goal.
And while a 1-0 victory would have been a solid result against the LaLiga side, Arsenal’s defensive fragilities once again cost them and allowed Atleti a way back into the game - and an away goal which hands them a major advantage ahead of next week’s second leg.
