Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists it was 'unfair' to question commitment of Alexis Sanchez before his move to Manchester United: 'When he is on the football pitch he wants to win'

Arsene Wenger has defended Alexis Sanchez's commitment to Arsenal despite losing his star man to Manchester United last month.

The Chilean brought his long-running transfer saga to an end in January when he swapped clubs with Henrikh Mkhitaryan to end his association with the Gunners.

But after some fans and pundits questioned Sanchez's efforts during the first half of the season, Wenger has insisted that the 29-year-old always gave his all.

The Frenchman, who was speaking exclusively to BT Sport ahead of Saturday's north London derby with Tottenham, said: 'Sanchez, for him it was very difficult because as soon as he had a game that was average he was questioned about his commitment and that is not his case.
