For three years at Real Madrid, Aitor Karanka was a sort of stunt double for Jose Mourinho. Whenever the No 1 was upset about something that had been said, written or produced from a referee's pocket, then the Real Madrid No 2 would step in.
In Mourinho's last season at the club he lost the Copa del Rey final to Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid and he also lost his cool in the second half to such an extent that he was sent to the stands.
After the final whistle, still raging, he did not go up to the directors box to collect his medal from his majesty Don Carlos.
