Far from being close to joining Manchester City, Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic is negotiating a contract extension to stay in Spain.

The Croatia international was linked with a move to City at the weekend by media in his homeland after he was left out of Barcelona's starting line-up for the 1-1 draw at Villarreal.

However, the 28-year-old is happy in Catalonia and is in discussions over a new contract at Barcelona.

The player's representative, and one of Europe's leading football agents Arturo Canales, president of Actyvos Group, said: 'Ivan is very happy at FC Barcelona, where he has been tremendously successful and has a contract with the club until 2019.
