Manchester City defender John Stones would benefit from more minutes with Vincent Kompany, says Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand believes John Stones would have had a smoother introduction to life at Manchester City if he had been able to get more minutes alongside Vincent Kompany.

Belgium defender Kompany has struggled with fitness issues throughout Pep Guardiola's first season at City and has been restricted to five starts this campaign.

And while Stones has, overall, impressed since his £47.5m summer switch from Everton, he has produced some underwhelming displays partnering the likes of Aleksandar Kolarov and Nicolas Otamendi.

'Stones has clearly been asked to go out there and take risks, and I admire that,' Ferdinand said to ESPN.
