Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola prepared to gamble on £33million arrival of Benfica goalkeeper Ederson

It's a measure of Ederson Moraes's remarkable progress that the man who will soon become the world's most expensive goalkeeper only made his debut for Benfica 15 months ago.

Ederson is expected to complete a £33million move to Manchester City in the next 24 hours, narrowly eclipsing the £32.6m it cost Juventus to sign Gianluigi Buffon from Parma in 2001.

Yet the 23-year-old Brazilian was an unproven No 2 to compatriot Julio Cesar until March last year when he was thrust into the Lisbon derby against Benfica's title rivals Sporting.

Ederson has since become one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers in world football, receiving widespread acclaim for his performances in the Champions League for his Portuguese club.
