Jamie Carragher says Manchester City 'descended to the level of the idiots on Twitter' by briefing about 'borderline xenophobia' from Jurgen Klopp... and calls them 'paranoid' after denying him an interview because he 'wears red pom poms'

Jamie Carragher has hit out at Manchester City after an anonymous briefing from the club claimed Jurgen Klopp's comments about their spending were 'borderline xenophobic'.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Carragher said City had 'descended to the level of the idiots on Twitter' and 'crossed a line' with the claim, which Liverpool and Klopp strongly denied.

City alleged that Klopp saying his side could not compete with the champions' spending had heightened tensions before the game.

City doubled down on their stance after the 1-0 loss at Anfield and put out the message that Klopp's assertion 'there are three clubs in world football who can do what they like financially' - believed to be City, Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle - was prejudiced.
