When Manchester City redesigned their old badge, they kept it simple. Gone were eagles, random gold stars and the motto superbia in proelia — pride in battle, to those who weren’t paying attention in Latin.
These were replaced by a tall sailing vessel, representing the Manchester ship canal, the red rose of Lancashire, the name of the club and a date: 1894. It is the year Ardwick Association Football Club became Manchester City. The pale blue shirt was first worn then, too.
And when the current owners arrived in 2008 they were entrusted with that legacy — 122 years now.
