Zero receivers started for LSU against Syracuse (but there’s a reason)

What is this, 1923?

LSU’s official starting lineup for its game against Syracuse Saturday included exactly zero wide receivers. In an age where teams around college football regularly deploy spread sets with four or even five wideouts, that’s a throwback to the distant past.

Don’t believe it? You can look it up.

The official lineup sheet actually lists four tight ends, two of whom most often line up at fullback (J.D. Moore, Foster Moreau, Jamal Pettigrew and Tory Carter). Those four were assigned to pave the way for Derrius Guice, while Danny Etling lined up at quarterback.
