Todd Peterson pitches -- and hits -- LSU to extra-innings win against South Carolina

HOOVER, Ala. -- In a game that wasn't normal for a second, LSU won in the most bizarre of finishes one could imagine.

Sophomore closer Todd Peterson, who had just pitched two innings on Tuesday, threw five more innings Thursday with the SEC Tournament on the line to keep LSU's run alive.

Then he came to the plate in the top of the 12th inning and doubled in two runs for LSU to beat South Carolina 6-4 at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Peterson had never had an at-bat in his two years of college baseball.

LSU needed him on the mound, though, so LSU coach Paul Mainieri turned to his 6-foot-5 pitcher who didn't even have batting gloves to put on.
