It pays to be a member of the SEC.
It pays really, really well.
The SEC announced Thursday that approximately $596.9 million of total revenue was divided among the league's 14 institutions members for the 2016-17 fiscal year, which ended August 31, 2017.
The average amount distributed, excluding bowl money retained by participants like LSU, was slightly over $40.9 million per school.
The total includes $573.8 million distributed from the conference office, as well as $23.1 million retained by institutions that participated in 2016-17 football bowl games to offset travel and other related bowl expenses.
