It was inevitable in Greg Deichmann's mind. His ever-present and unflappable confidence made that true as much as anything else. Still, it took him weathering a year that tested Deichmann's baseball soul to get to this point.
The Metairie native who starred for four seasons at Brother Martin will be LSU's starting first baseman when the season begins Friday against Cincinnati at Alex Box Stadium (7 p.m.) so better late than never he will be where he always thought he would be.
This isn't the script that Deichmann anticipated, though, and he intends to make the struggles it took to turn his fortunes around as motivation.
