Promoting a coach from within can pay off — and it also can backfire

Nine weeks after firing Les Miles, LSU did not have to look far for his replacement – just down the hall, in fact. Joe Alleva hired Ed Orgeron, who had been Miles’ defensive line coach and took over on an interim basis when Miles was fired.

Here is a chronologicial look at how a handful of major programs fared after they promoted from within or hired an interim. It’s definitely a mixed bag.
