HOUSTON – LSU's Leonard Fournette fell 47 yards short of becoming the first player in SEC history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.
But since the sophomore running back had such a magnificent ending to a memorable year, rushing for 212 yards and four TDs, and catching a 44-yard TD pass in LSU's 56-27 Texas Bowl victory over Texas Tech Tuesday, the disappointment of not reaching that milestone was minimal.
His final total of 1,953 yards in 12 games is the second best rushing season in SEC history, behind whatever total Alabama's Derrick Henry reaches before his season ends.
