LSU's Grayson Byrd and Greg Deichmann juggle opportunity with remaining patient

Over a 30-years plus run of success, the LSU baseball program has been built on a foundation of big-name players fulfilling potential and shining brightest when needed. Hasn't hurt, though, the "next-man-up" mentality is such a real and tangible thing.

Recent years provide all the proof of how important depth and versatility can be.

Whether it was the 2009 late-season switch with a light-hitting shortstop (Austin Nola) taking over and sliding the former Major Leaguer (D.J. LeMahieu) to second base, seldom-used Jackson Slaid delivering the hit that lifted the Tigers to an SEC championship three years ago or backup outfielders Jared Foster and Chris Sciambra teaming up for a game-winning hit at the SEC Tournament in 2013 -- there are always unexpected subplots.
