LSU will retire the No. 36 jersey of former baseball great Eddy Furniss on Friday night before a game against Mississippi State. The only surprise with the Furniss announcement is that it took 18 years after he played his final college game for the honor. Glance at LSU, SEC and NCAA career offensive records and Furniss is at or near the top of all of the meaningful ones. Retiring his jersey was, in other words, a no-brainer.
Still, the honor for Furniss is no small feat. LSU has been historically stringent when it comes to retiring jerseys. Furniss is only the ninth former athlete in any sport to receive the honor.
