LSU will honor legendary running back Dr. Billy Cannon with a statue erected on campus the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee announced on Friday.
The committee approved a proposal of the statue in a unanimous vote.
Cannon, a native of Baton Rouge and a 1959 LSU graduate, won the Heisman Trophy that same year and led the Tigers to a national title in 1958. He was inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975, as well as the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
“There is no player more synonymous with LSU football than Billy Cannon,” said Bill Demastes, LSU faculty athletics representative and Athletic Hall of Fame Committee Chair.
