LSU mascot Mike the Tiger has died after a battle with cancer.

Mike VI, who had been LSU’s mascot since 2007, died as a result of spindle cell sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. The school made the announcement Tuesday.

Last week, LSU’s veterinary department announced that the tiger’s cancer, which had been diagnosed in May, had resumed its spread and that Mike had only one or two months to live.

In response to the news, fans have begun expressing their sadness, leaving cards, signs and balloons outside the tiger’s habitat on campus. The school posted a photo gallery.
