LSU baseball to be without closer Hunter Newman for the start of SEC play

LSU baseball will be without another top reliever for roughly two weeks if not longer.

Fifth-year senior closer Hunter Newman will miss the Southeastern Conference season opening series that starts Friday against Georgia with an unspecified back injury, coach Paul Mainieri said.

This comes on the heels of an elbow ligament tear for projected junior setup man Doug Norman that required Tommy John surgery and put him out for the season.

As a consequence, sophomore Caleb Gilbert will move into the closer role, a spot he held last season for about a month.

"He's going to be out for a while," Mainieri said of Newman.
