Mike VI, LSU’s live tiger mascot, will stay in his habitat for football game days while battling cancer during the 2016 season.
Mike will be unable to participate in game-day events, the university’s school of veterinary medicine announced.
The tiger was diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma in May and has been receiving treatment since then, including radiation treatments at the Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center. The university described the type of cancer as “extremely rare.”
Although these treatments have temporarily slowed growth of the tumors, veterinarians expect radiation-resistant cells to begin growing again.
