Fans in Baton Rouge Saturday might spot one of sports’ most renowned doctors – and one of football’s most inspiring recovery stories.
Dr. James Andrews and Devon Gales will serve as keynote speakers for an Emergency Preparation for Athletics course. LSU is holding the course in partnership with Southern University.
Andrews is known around the sports world for his work in orthopedic surgery and may be most noted for his reconstructive procedures on baseball pitchers.
Before those days, though, he excelled in track and field as an LSU student-athlete. In 1963, the future doctor – listed in the record books as “Jim Andrews” – won the SEC championship in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet.
