On Sunday LSU played two baseball games where a defeat would end its 2021 season and Paul Mainieri’s coaching career.
AJ Labas rose to the occasion in a 9-4 win over Gonzaga late Sunday evening; later that night Javen Coleman, Dylan Crews and Gavin Dugas led the way in LSU’s 4-1 win over the Oregon Ducks.
Mainieri used an atypical approach to start the game. Trent Vietmeir got the start and only pitched the first; Javen Coleman came on in the second inning and the freshman pitched phenomenally. Coleman threw a career high six innings and only allowed three hits while striking out six.
