The Les Miles Era with the LSU Tigers could be ending in the near future. The Tigers went from National Championship contender to unranked after three straight losses, which has led to speculation that Miles won't be head coach at LSU much longer. The latest report comes from The Times-Picayune, a New Orleans-based newspaper.
Their source says that Miles' massive buyout won't be an issue for the LSU athletic department. If Miles is fired, he is due a $15 million buyout, which some thought would be too much for LSU to afford.
"The money is there," the source told the Times-Picayune.
The source also said that LSU's next game against Texas A&M will have no impact on Miles' future. It doesn't bode well for Miles that a win wouldn't help his case.
The Tigers have dropped three straight games by double-digit deficits for the first time since 1966. Those losses have only made things worse for Miles among the Tiger Athletic Foundation, which is LSU's powerful booster group. The TAF was spilt on LSU extending Miles' contract two seasons ago and LSU's struggles have led the majority of the boosters to believe it's time for the school to part with Miles.
According to the Times Picayune, Miles met with officials from the athletic department last week to discuss his future. Among the options discussed were Miles being fired and Miles retiring in 2016. However, several TAF members would prefer that Miles be fired now, in order to have a new coach and avoid Miles holding lame-duck status.
LSU officials have reportedly begun to vet candidates, with FSU's Jimbo Fisher at the top of the list. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and TCU's Gary Patterson are also candidates.
