Louisville and others likely to follow Stanford’s lead

When one of America’s wealthiest universities is cutting athletic programs, others should be concerned. Educational institutions tend to follow the leader so one can see Vince Tyra already sharpening his pencil at the University of Louisville.

The college sports world took notice last week when Stanford University announced it was cutting 11 sports programs. They include men’s and women’s fencing, field hockey, lightweight rowing, men’s rowing, co-ed and women’s sailing, squash, synchronized swimming, men’s volleyball and wrestling.

Yes, that Stanford, the behemoth with a $26.4 billion endowment, the fourth largest endowment in the nation, behind only Harvard, Texas and Yale.
