The 49ers opened the second half with a 12-play, 70-yard drive capped bya 28-yard field goal from Phil Dawson that cut the Rams' lead to 16-13 with 9:37 to play in the third quarter. The key play of the drive was a 44-yard pass from Blaine Gabbert to Bruce Ellington. The drive reached the Rams' 15 before the defense again toughened and limited San Francisco to three points.
The Rams responded with a lengthy drive of their own but came away empty when Greg Zuerlein's 52-yard field goal try with 1:13 left in the third quarter went wide right.
