SAN ANTONIO — Luis Perez threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Arlington Renegades to a 35-26 victory over the (Washington) D.C. Defenders late Saturday night in the XFL championship game.
The Renegades were just 4-6 in the South but upset division winner Houston in the league semifinals before beating North winner D.C., which was 9-1 in the regular season, then beat Seattle in the semifinals.
Seattle edged the Battlehawks for the North's second, and final, playoff spot based on a long series of tiebreakers. Both teams went 7-3.
Bob Stoops, who coached Oklahoma to a college football national championship in 2000, was at the helm for the Renegades as they became the second XFL champion.
