Thomas: Al Saunders still going strong at 70 as NFL assistant

Compared to Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, who turns 80 on Sept. 9, Al Saunders is a relative pup.

But at 70, Saunders is among the oldest NFL coaches, and at an age when most in his profession — or any other — are enjoying retirement.

“This is the honest truth,” Saunders said. “When I left Oakland (after the 2014 season), I thought 35 years in the league is long enough. And the next day, I said, you know what, there’s nothing that I would rather do, other than obviously be with my family — and my kids are grown and gone.
