Earlier this week, the NFL released all of the new rule proposals that were sent in by teams for consideration prior to the upcoming 2021 season. One of those proposals involved a consideration to expand eligible jersey numbers for running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, linebackers, and defensive backs.
Under the proposed ruling, all of the above positions would have access to numbers one through 49, on top of linebackers retaining 50-59 and 90-99 with receivers and tight ends still eligible for 80-89.
Many NFL players who played with a single-digit number in college — like Jalen Ramsey who played in the number eight — would likely make the move back or may try to switch to another single-digit number.
