As it reported over the weekend, the NFL plans to announce the official move to a 17-game schedule starting in 2021 sometime this week. The league has been using a 16-game schedule since the 1978 season, marking over 40+ seasons without a change to the current format.
NFL is expected to expand the regular season schedule this week to 17 games. The league had played a 16-game regular season schedule since 1978, by far the longest stretch without a change in NFL history.

Per Peter King of NBC, one of the main points of interest regarding the new schedule is that the league will not offer teams an additional bye week.
