After an exchange of punts to open the game, the Rams scored first on a 42-yard field goal from Greg Zuerlein with 8:10 to play in the opening quarter. The drive, which started at the 50-yard line, was highlighted by a 16-yard gain on a Case Keenum to Tavon Austin pass. On the play, Austin made an early spin move to evade cornerback Jerome Lane.

The drive stalled when a Keenum run came up a yard short.

Onn Seattle's next drive, fullback Will Tukuafo was met on a run up the middle by safety-turned-linebacker Mark Barron, who knocked the ball free.
